About the Item

A unique pair of rustic and traditional side or accent tables from the Acquisitions collection by Henredon. Features a distressed walnut slab inset into an iron base with X-frame and arrow pointed feet. On Dec. 5, 2002 the often-heard rumors became true: Furniture Brands is acquiring Henredon, Drexel Heritage and Maitland-Smith. It had been expected since before the October market, but the companies involved were unclear. Was Bench Craft included? La Barge? Beacon Hill? Henredon and Drexel had a long, inter-related history before Drexel acquired Heritage. Henredon, with a name derived from founders Henry Wilson, Ralph Edwards and Don VanNoppen, went public soon after cross-town competitor Drexel was acquired by Champion Paper. Back then, all the paper companies were getting into furniture. Scott Paper had acquired Brown Jordan and Mead owned Stanley Furniture. Drexel Heritage was divested in the mid-1970s to Peter Kennedy and his investors. Kennedy was chairman of Dominick & Dominick, a New York brokerage. Henredon was one of our industry’s most successful public companies, having been founded in Morganton, North Carolina in 1945, with a record of design leadership from Ken Volz (remember Scene One?) and strong management from Sterling Collett, his brother John, and later from Bill Smith. It had profit margins that others could only dream about, and steady sales growth. Henredon’s managers recognized the talent of Paul Maitland-Smith and did a 50-50 joint venture with him in the early 1980s. Who could forget the Maitland-Smith showroom across from Henredon’s showroom? It offered an upscale global look using a breadth of woods, textures and materials at surprisingly good values, exuding much of the novelty and creativeness that had been in Thomasville’s Four Corners of the World collection for decades. Meanwhile, Drexel Heritage decided in 1976-1977 to take a leaf from Ethan Allen’s book and go into controlled distribution with one of the first galley programs. It grew rapidly under industry legend Howard Haworth before he decided to enter public service. Drexel acquired Frederick Edward, the upholstery specialist, and with it the talented duo of Darrell Ferguson and Fred Copeland. Under them, Drexel continued to prosper. In 1986, the families behind Henredon decided to consider alternatives, including putting it up for sale. There was great interest, and one of Wall Street’s most successful companies, Masco Corp., won the bidding. Best known for its Delta faucet line, Masco had a diversified product line that mostly was related to the home. Soon, plumbing competitor Kohler acquired Baker Furniture and the Baker, Knapp & Tubbs showrooms. Then Masco acquired cross-town competitor Drexel Heritage to add to their furniture portfolio. And the rest is history. We recently published a list of former corporate owners and found the exercise to be very interesting. History is a great guide and we try to learn from it. Henredon

Founded in 1945, Henredon is one of the more recently minted of the top-tier North Carolina furniture makers. Among collectors, Henredon is admired both for its sleek, sexy furniture of the 1970s and for its partnerships with noted designers, a program that started in the 1950s with decorating icon Dorothy Draper and architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

From the start, Henredon — the brand name is a portmanteau term, derived from the first names or initials of three of the company’s founders — has been best known for its vintage case pieces, such as cabinets, dressers, armoires and credenzas. Though not on the cutting edge stylistically, the company’s production has always kept pace with contemporary tastes. In 1953, Henredon began a collaboration with Dorothy Draper, famed for bravura interior design commissions such as the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco and the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia. Her taste for bold, modernized historical style is reflected in the incised baroque medallions of her España line and the geometric motif of her Viennese furnishings group.

In 1955, Henredon launched the Taliesin Ensemble by Wright, named after the architect’s houses in Wisconsin and Arizona. The pieces are recognizable by their angular shapes a dentil motif on their edges. In those years, Henredon had a cross-licensing agreement with the Heritage furniture company, and Draper and Wright furniture is usually labeled Heritage-Henredon.

In later decades, Henredon produced collections for such designers as Ralph Lauren and Laura Ashley. The company took a stylish turn in the 1970s, fabricating new and unusual forms like mirrored room dividers and console tables with rounded corners and burl-wood veneers. Such pieces are priced in the $3,000 to $4,000 range, as are chests of drawers by Draper. Wright furniture tends toward the higher end, priced around $7,000. As you will see on 1stDibs, Henredon was an aesthetically diverse maker, but its furniture commands attention and makes a statement in any eclectic decor.
