Antique 17th Century Spanish Chestnut Carved Trunk or Chest

About the Item

A beautiful trunk or coffer from Northern Spain that was made in the first part of the 17th century. It features a rectangular hinged molded top over a deeply carved base. The front of the chest has five geometric circular carvings surrounded by a carved panel over a molded skirt. The round original keyplate fits very well with the overall design of the carving. All forged iron hardware is original to the chest and in full working order. The whole chest is made in solid chestnut wood and all sides are made from one single board of wood. It has the typical dovetail assembly. It has its rich original patina gathered over many years.

  • Condition:
    Repaired. Wear consistent with age and use. The chest has recently been restored in our workshop. The gaps in th bottom were closed and the lid was moved forward slightly to cover the fron again. The chest in is extraordinary good antique and authentic condition given its age.
