Vintage 1960s Hansen Mike Doyle Model Longboard

About the Item

Mid 1960s Hansen Surfboards Mike Doyle signature model longboard. A very fine example of a 1960s longboard featuring a triple redwood stringer design and green pin-striping. This vintage surfboard has been well preserved and remains in all original condition. Mike Doyle (1941-2019) “Flat out one of the greatest all-around surfers there has ever been,” according to former World Surfing Champion, Corky Carroll. Doyle was runner up in the 1964 World Surfing Championships and winner of the 1965 United States and World Championship titles for tandem surfing. He was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame in Huntington Beach, California in 2003. Doyle was later inducted into the International Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame in 2009. “He was just the epitome of what a surfer looked like, he was chiseled, bronzed, a great surfer, charismatic, always had a smile on his face like he was having a good time.” Peter Townend (1976 IPS/ASP World Surfing Champion).

Dale ‘Hawk’ Velzy made numerous contributions to the world of surfing and as a result was one of the first individuals to be inducted into the Hermosa Beach Surfers Walk of Fame in 2003, two years before passing away. Velzy began shaping surfboards in the 1940's in Manhattan Beach, California. Board of the day were hard to ride and transport due to the size and weight. Velzy saw this as an opportunity and started to shape surfboards using lightweight balsawood which made the boards easier to ride and transport. He soon outgrew his first board shop in Manhattan Beach which was opened in 1950, this shop would later be credited as the first commercial surfboard factory.
