A rare brass and steel mechanical standard yard comparator, in a mahogany case, by W. T. Avery of Birmingham. The brass standard yard is by De Grave, Short & Co of London and is dated 1936. Made for the County of Devon. Indenture number 4701. Marked with royal ciphers for George V and Elizabeth II, and portcullis date marks. For Avery see: G. Clifton, Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851, (London, 1996), p.13.
