Miniature Bronze Angel Chair by Wendell Castle

About

Total edition of 30 numbered examples and two proofs. Signed bottom corner on back, Castle 91. Numbered 22/30 on bottom edge. Timed to coincide with the opening of American Craft Museum's showing of Castle's mid-career retrospective, "The Furniture of Wendell Castle"; Peter Joseph Gallery's inaugural exhibition "Angel Chairs: New Work by Wendell Castle" opened in February 1991, to considerable fanfare. Castle's new work included stack laminated wood and patinated metal "Angel Chairs" and an assortment of extraordinary pedestals. The miniature bronze Angel chair was produced as a special edition in honour of the Dual exhibitions. Charming in its small stature, with its cantilevered seat and decorative cut-out in the back, it reminds us of Castle's sculptural creativity and wit. Castle has always insisted that it is the form, not the material he is thinking of, and this tiny chair captures the tactile whimsy of his vision. An extremely collectible small work by America's father of the art furniture movement and renowned sculptor, designer and educator.

About Wendell Castle (Maker)

Wendell Castle was an American furniture maker celebrated for his experimental creations in wood and plastic. He was one of the first to create seating, lighting and tables that resemble sculpture, otherwise known as art furniture. A founding father of the American Studio movement , Castle was known for his craftsmanship and broke new ground in the 1960s with the stack-laminate technique, which involves layering and then sanding thin sheets of wood. In the ’70s, he transitioned to using gel-coated plastic in bright colors.

Castle integrated both mediums in his designs from the 2000s, which, like his vintage pieces, are characterized by curved, biomorphic lines and whimsical undertones. Ever the innovator, he integrated computers and robots in his later production process to come up with wildly imaginative forms. Castle was working on a new body of work when he passed away in 2018 at the age of 85. Read more about Wendell Castle in Introspective magazine
