Large Master Maple Sap Collecting Barrel in Old Red Wash, Vermont, circa 1880
This large sap gathering barrel was used on a Vermont farm sledge to hold sap collected from the smaller tree buckets in the sugarbush, and then transported by horse or ox team back to the sugar shack for boiling down to maple syrup. It was a necessary item of agricultural work on a small farm before the modernization of the maple syrup industry with plastic tubing and plastic holding tanks. It is now rare to find one like this example. This barrel was made with fifteen oak staves and held together by a bentwood ring nailed to the exterior of the top, and with two hand-forged iron rings at the waist and the base. It has its original finish of red wash paint and has scars from three other iron rings that are no longer on it. The barrel remains sturdy and strong, and adaptable for many uses in the modern home. The barrel slants outward from a 17.75 inch diameter at the top to a 20.5 inch diameter at the base, and is 24 inches high. This attractive historical artifact is functional in many decorative ways in the modern home to which it will add a comforting sense of the past and an artifact of Vermont history.
