Medical: Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, in Leather, New Edition, London, 1863

About

This is an 1863 printing of the 1652 revised and expanded edition of the famous work by Robert Burton (1577-1640). The original work was published in 1621 and became a 17th century bestseller with many re-printings throughout the century. This current copy contains a facsimile of the 1652 frontispiece with its engraved illustrations. The full title reads: "The Anatomy of Melancholy, What It Is, with All the Kinds, Causes, Symptoms, Prognostics, and Several Cures of It. In Three Partitions with Their Several Sections, Members, and Subsections, Philosophically, Medically, Historically Opened and Cut Up. By Democritus Junior, with a Satirical Preface, Conducing to the Following Discourse. A New Edition, Corrected, and Enriched by the Translations of the Numerous Classical Extracts. By Democritus Minor." Burton's book was famous for its witty, literary and psychological investigation of the ancient belief of black bile -- one of the four humors affecting temperament such as Melancholy, or what is known today as Depression. The book was endorsed by many of the great intellects and writers of the seventeenth century because of its erudition and wit. "The Anatomy of Melancholy" has become a Classic, and it would be the perfect item in a modern-day book collection, especially with its attractive leather binding. The binding consists of three-quarter crimson Moroccan leather and red buckram covers, a gilt and hubbed two-color spine, hand-marbled endpapers, gilt page tops, and two engraved illustrations inside. This edition was published by William Tegg of London in 1863. It has an owner's bookplate on the front endpaper showing it once belonged to Charles D. Armstrong, head of the family-owned Armstrong flooring company, who purchased the book in London, circa 1928.
