Full title: Saducismus Triumphatus: Or, Full and Plain Evidence Concerning Witches and Apparitions. In two parts. The first treating of their possibility, the second of their real existence. By Joseph Glanvil (1636-1680), late Chaplain in Ordinary to his Majesty (Charles II) and Fellow of the Royal Society. First edition, published by J. Collins and S. Lownds, London 1681, rebound in 19th century full calf-leather covers with blind tooling, a red spine label, and hand-marbled end-papers. The binding is signed by Lauriat of Boston on the top edge of the flyleaf. Joseph Glanvil's book was a most important influence in spreading belief in the existence of witches in Great Britain and the Colonies. Glanvil based his proof on holy scripture, anecdotal evidence of eye-witnesses, demonstrations by psychics, clairvoyants and mediums, discussions at academic conferences by authorities on the matter, and his own contact with a person with epilepsy. Glanvil combined the proofs of science and religion to confirm the existence of witches, and their danger, in British and American Colonial society of the late 17th century. The lead photograph in this listing shows the title page to the second part of the book, and depicts the various manifestations of witches and apparitions discussed in the work. An appendix discusses evidence of witches in the Kingdom of Sweden. A noted collector's bookplate is glued to the front end-papers.
