About the Item

The Genuine Works of William Hogarth Illustrated with Biographical Anecdotes. Volume I, London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1808. First edition hardcover. 524 pp. Volume II, London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1810. First edition hardcover. 444 pp. plus index. Volume III, London: Nichols, Son, and Bentley, 1817. First edition hardcover. 525 pp. plus index. A remarkable set of antique books on the works of William Hogarth including a chronological catalogue and commentary. Illustrated with 211 original engravings. William Hogarth (1696-1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. He was born in London, the son of an unsuccessful schoolmaster and writer from Westmoreland. After an apprenticeship to a goldsmith, he began to produce his own engraved designs in circa 1710. Hogarth's works are mostly satirical caricatures that became widely popular and were mass-produced. He was by far the most significant English artist of his generation. It is rare to find the original volumes in a set. The majority of plates are on woven paper with a watermark dated 1809. Plates are printed on one side and separated by a blank cover sheet. NPT Books, a division of N.P. Trent Antiques, has a large collection of used and out of print books on art, architecture, decoration and antiques with a focus on 1st editions, signed and limited editions.
