Barbra Streisand by Steve Schapiro and Lawrence Schiller

About the Item

Pitch perfect. From Funny Girl to a Star is Born, the meteoric rise of Barbra Streisand. In 1970 Barbra Streisand published a story in Life magazine titled "Who Am I Anyway?" It was the very question two leading photojournalists of the day—Steve Schapiro and Lawrence Schiller—were also asking as they photographed her during her first five years in Hollywood, working to get beneath the veneer and capture "the real Barbra." Brimming with photographs—over half of which have never been published before—and stories behind the shots from Schapiro and Schiller, this is a must-have collection for any Streisand fan. All the best movies of Streisand's first Hollywood decade are here: Funny Girl, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, The Way We Were, The Owl and the Pussycat, Up the Sandbox, Funny Lady, and A Star Is Born. So too are her loves, directors, confidantes, and costars: Elliott Gould, William Wyler, Sydney Pollack, Vincente Minnelli, Cis Corman, Omar Sharif, Kris Kristofferson, and, of course, Robert Redford. Through it all a picture emerges not of a singer who could act, but of an actress who could sing, write, direct, dance, and do just about anything she put her mind to. Limited to a total of 1,200 numbered copies signed by Steve Schapiro and Lawrence Schiller, this book is available as Collector's Edition (No. 201-1,200), and also in two Art Editions of 100 copies each (No. 1-100 with a print signed by Steve Schapiro, and No. 101-200 with a print signed by Lawrence Schiller). The photographers: Steve Schapiro is a distinguished journalistic photographer whose pictures have graced the covers of Vanity Fair, Time, Sports Illustrated, Life, Look, Paris Match, and People, and are found in many museum collections. He has published five books of his work, American Edge, Schapiro's Heroes, The Godfather Family Album, Taxi Driver and Then and Now. In Hollywood he has worked on more than 200 motion pictures; his most famous film posters are for Midnight Cowboy, Taxi Driver, Parenthood, and The Godfather Part III. Lawrence Schiller began his career as a photojournalist for Life, Playboy, and Paris Match, among others, photographing some of the most iconic figures of the 1960s, from Lee Harvey Oswald to Robert F. Kennedy, from Ali and Foreman to Redford and Newman. His many book collaborations include the Pulitzer Prize-winning book with Norman Mailer, The Executioner's Song; and he has written five New York Times bestsellers. He has also directed seven motion pictures and miniseries for television; The Executioner's Song and Peter the Great won five Emmys. He is also the founder of The Norman Mailer Center & Writer’s Colony in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The contributing authors: Patt Morrison is a Los Angeles Times writer and columnist with a share of two Pulitzer prizes. She has six Emmys and ten Golden Mike awards for her public broadcasting work, and is the author of a best-selling book on the L.A. River. Lawrence Grobel has written 20 books relating to writers, the entertainment industry, and its stars; and conducted the October 1977 Playboy interview with Barbra Streisand. The editor: Nina Wiener studied literature and art history at Vassar College in New York before falling in love with making books. Since 2002 she has edited dozens of titles for seller, including Walton Ford’s Pancha Tantra, Norman Mailer’s MoonFire, and Lawrence Schiller’s Marilyn & Me.

  • Steve Schapiro, Andy Warhol & Friends, Signed, Limited Edition Book
By TASCHEN, Andy Warhol, Steve Schapiro
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
Pop Life. Pictures of Andy Warhol by Steve Schapiro. In 1965, Steve Schapiro started documenting Andy Warhol for Life magazine: Warhol was cementing a reputation as an important Pop artist who drew his inspiration from popular culture and commercial objects. With his sunglasses, blond wig, and bland public utterances, Warhol was enigmatic, charismatic, intensely ambitious, and aware that to become a star, you needed the presence of people to document your ascent. Schapiro, also ambitious and hardworking, who in his own words “kept quiet and smiled a lot,” was an ideal witness to Warhol’s relentless rise from cult New York artist to 20th-century icon. Ironically, Life never published the story, so many of these images are seen here for the first time, scanned from negatives found deep in Schapiro’s archive. Between 1965 and 1966, Warhol was at his creative peak. In this period, Warhol turned his life into art and conceived the “Andy Warhol persona”—arguably his greatest masterpiece. Schapiro busily photographed Warhol...

  • Tom Wolfe, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Art Edition "Me and My Shadow"
By Ted Streshinsky, Lawrence Schiller, Tom Wolfe
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
Fiber-based gelatin silver print, 21.8 x 28.8 cm on 22.9 x 33 cm paper (8.6 x 11.8 in. on 9 x 13 in. paper); hardcover volume in a slipcase, letterpress-printed text, two different paper stocks, and tip-ins, 24 x 34 cm (9.4 x 13.4 in.), 356 pages. In 1964, famed writer Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters set off across America on a “Transcontinental Bus Tour,” headed for the New York World’s Fair. Kesey’s journey, in the company of his Merry Pranksters, lies at the heart of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, an as-if-first-hand account of the group’s antics and ethos by Tom Wolfe, wunderkind of the New Journalism movement. This Art Edition presents Wolfe’s era-defining text in letterpress, along with facsimile reproductions of his manuscript pages, ephemera of the period, and photographs of the acid scene by Lawrence Schiller and Ted Streshinsky. The accompanying print, Me and My Shadow, by Lawrence Schiller, was photographed at the Hollywood Acid Test on February 25, 1966. As the first photojournalist to capture the acid scene from the inside, Schiller began with a single contact in Berkeley, California, and built a large network of young, receptive subjects who allowed him to document their experiences with LSD starting in late 1965. At first, he was a fly on the wall as groups of friends tripped in the privacy of their homes. By early 1966 he had met the Merry Pranksters and was invited to the Acid Test in Hollywood. During the Test, Kool-Aid laced with a heavy dose of LSD was served up from an industrial-sized pot. Participants turned on the Grateful Dead’s music and tuned in to the burgeoning psychedelic scene. Schiller’s image of a tripster “freaking freely” with his own shadow—long believed to be Neal Cassady—appeared in Life magazine in March 1966 in a photo essay which served to introduce the nation to the sweeping new LSD epidemic. For Flaming Lips lead singer Wayne Coyne...
