About the Item

Mirror (mirror's glass included) / design created by Dagobert Peche (1887-1923). Made of limewood / white shaded as well as shine-gilded and matte-gilded. The mirror is topped by very interesting stylized pattern consisting of leaves as well as of wine grapes / manufactured circa 1922-1923. The original design created by Peche is still existing in the archive of Wiener Werkstätte, nowadays in Viennese Museum of Applied Arts / inventory number KI 12707-4 & model number HN 12707-4 (please look at the referring pictures added here). Size: height 15.98 inches (= 40.6 cm) width 9.44 inches (= 24.0 cm) depth 0.98 inch (= 2.5 cm) The picture's frame was made circa 1922 by Max Welz (Frame Manufacturer) on behalf of Wiener Werkstätte: The Max Welz firm had been a traditional Viennese Craft workshop which succeeded in manufacturing items of Viennese avant-garde art as from Turn of Century (1900), shortly after the takeover (1896) by Max Welz who had inherited the firm from his father Johann. Max Welz became member of Austrian Werkbund, having Gotten in touch with Viennese avant-garde art then (for example with Dagobert Peche and Josef Hoffmann). Welz participated in various exhibitions, for example Paris 1925, Barcelona 1929, Brussels 1935 and finally Paris 1937 when he got the "Grand Prix" due to his professional achievements. The mirror was designed by Dagobert Peche (1922). Dagobert Peche (3rd April 1887 - 16th April 1923) was an Austrian artist and metalworker designer. After having studied in Vienna, Peche made a study trip to Great Britain where he learned to know the technique of black-white design of graphic artist Aubrey Beardsley (1872–1898) which influenced his work strongly then. Peche was in Rome, too, during year 1912. After his stay in Rome Peche worked for magazine 'Kunst und Dekoration' (= 'Art and Decoration' / edited in Darmstadt): He was very productive, having created designs for wallpapers, woven fabrics, further for works made by lace bobbins and embroideries, for jewelleries, works of ivory, frames for mirrors, even for furniture pieces, ceramics, paperworks, metal objects and fashion. Climax of Peche's work was the cooperation with Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) as from the year 1915 when he was engaged to work on behalf of Wiener Werkstaette. Sadly Dagobert Peche died very early, at age of 36, in Moedling near Vienna. Condition: Excellent or there aren't any damages existing ! The reflexions visible on surface derive only from flashlight as well as from glaze of gilding.
