French Regence Period Carved and Painted Wood Mirror

About the Item

The large well-shaped frame with numerous openings showing mirror set behind, circa 1740. The frame is carved to depict cartouches composed of foliate borders and vining elements. These are made up of many s and c curved sections which will become with the addition of asymmetrical design concepts the fully formed Rococo ideals seen in the reign of Louis XV. The carving is deep and robust with a fine old dry surface in an old gray-white paint. This color is most likely the original color applied to the frame.
