About the Item
A large Louis XVI period Trumeau Mirror, with cream-painted and gilt frame featuring raised Neoclassical designs, and with upper oil-on-canvas scene of children playing in a forest setting.
The mirror dating from the last quarter of the 1700s, and French in origin.
Stylistically, the mirror exhibits the refined Neoclassical designs and themes of the Louis XVI period. The fashion for austere Greco-Roman imagery developed as a response to the fanciful themes and exubertant forms of the Rococo. The mirror, with its bell-flowers, trophic crests, and tied-ribbon, exhibits perfectly the adornments of the style.
