Exceptionally Large 17th Century Walnut Guilloché Mirror with Antique Glass
The Dutch most notably, the Flemish and Italians made similar mirrors during this period. Baroque furniture became popular among the nobility and aristocracy as a symbol of power and wealth. A guilloché, a tool, was used to carve the intricate details and pattern. This particular mirror, exceptional because of the combined attributes regarding size, age, quality, straight design without “ears” and antique mercury glass, is from Cremona in Lombardy. Cremona, an ancient town along the Po, is known for its history of fine artisans and it’s tradition of craftsmanship and music. It is famous for its violin and viola making families called “luthiers” including the Strativari, Guarneri, and Amati families. This mirrors’ desirable rich color, patina and execution is a fine example of the period and craftsmanship synonymous with this region. The mirror has antique glass, we do not know how old exactly but it is completely usable and beautiful.
