Antique Early 20th Cty French Renaissance Rectangular Mirror with Fruit Décor

About the Item

This beautiful antique French rectangular overmantle mirror was made in Northern France in 1905. The mirror is elaborately decorated with fruits of the harvest. It shows plums, pears, apples, grapes, blackberries, cherries, and grain. The mirror frame is partially gold leaf and partially silver leaf gilded. The silver leaf was polished to a high degree of gloss and was then patinated with yellow wax to achieve a pale gold color. The rest of the frame was gold leaf gilded with only a little polishing. The result was a rich gold tone with semi-gloss. This method of combining the two shades of gold was common in Northern France and Belgium in the late 19th century. The facetted mirror plate is original and has a few spots. It has the makers sticker on the back and is dated 1905. The sticker is oval-shaped and it can be seen in the glass as a spot. The piece is in great authentic condition without damage. Condition details: The mirror plate was removed from the frame. Both mirror plate and frame were gently cleaned throughout. Small repairs were done to both low corners of the frame. The glass is authentic to the piece and has a facetted edge. The bottom side is straight and this is original. The back cladding to protect the mirror plate was renewed.

A beautiful large oval mirror with rich ornaments and original facetted mirror plate. The mirror has a very warm antique look and feel. The mirror has an ornate top decoration with a central “fleur de lis” with floral elements. At the bottom, there is also a smaller decoration with acanthus and floral elements. This mirror is made in Southern France and it has a solid pine frame that was smoothened with gesso. The most elevated part of the frame features a floral engraving and the inner part is adorned with a Classic pearl beading. The ornaments were casted with the use of ground cattle bone and plaster, reinforced with steel wires. The mixture of these materials is used in early mirror frames. Before casting was common practice, ornaments were hand carved in wood. A time consuming process and with the growing demand for these mirrors, new production methods were introduced.
