About the Item
Handmade and hand decorated Mid-Century Modern chalk white and anthracite striped ceramics table lamp by German designer Marianne Starck for Danish Michael Andersen & Son. From the "Tribal" series where white motifs and patterns were carved through to black clay. Model 5880. Stamped and signed at base. E27. Rewired with original fitting. In beautiful condition.

Marianne Starck (1937-2001) worked as the artistic director at Michael Andersen & Sons on the Danish island of Bornholm from 1955 to the company's closure in 1993. During these decades her output of designs was vast and not very well cataloged. One of her most striking and popular series was for the Tribal series - also known as the Negro series. The motifs vary from abstract forms and geometric patterns to stylized animals and humans. Her work clearly reflects that she studied as a graphic designer in Hamburg, Germany, before she took her artistry to the ceramic scene in Mid-Century Denmark.
