Antique Paris Sevres Louis XVI Style Gilt Bronze Charles Labarre Lamps

$25,000Asking Price

About

True works of art, these magnificently hand painted, Sevres or psudo-Sevres porcelain lamps from the late 19th century were originally lidded vases. Exquisitely painted in the round and signed by the famous artist Charles Lebarre, and featuring 4 different scenes of beautifully rendered maidens, cherubs and putti in lush and idyllic garden scenes with bucolic and pastoral vistas, this remarkable pair of museum quality lamps are fit for a palace. Porcelain lamps feature high relief, foliate and berried laurel leaf bronze gold d’ore ormolu trim and are mounted on elaborate, square bronze gold d’ore ormolu bases with suspended drapery, rosette floral medallions and fluted straight legs. When they were converted into lamps, the vases were mounted onto well proportioned, square giltwood platforms. Elaborate ormolu acorn finials are the finishing touch adorn the top of each lamp. Signed, “C. Labarre M.S.” on both lamps near the bottom of the painted scenes. Charles Labarre was a famous French porcelain painter active in the 1890s who has been recorded as working at Doulton Burslem and Sèvres. He notably was the painter of the Columbus Vase, shown by Doulton & Co. at the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893. As we do not wish to risk unmounting the vases to inspect the maker's mark, we are unable to verify the maker as Sevres. It is noteworthy, however, that very similar vases, painted by the same artist, Charles Labarre, described as "Sevres style" and "psudo-Sevres" sold at auction from Sotheby's for $104,500.00. Lamps feature telescoping harps to adjust to the height of the lampshade. Measures approximately 7.5” wide x 7.5” deep and adjusts from approximately 33.5” to 38” high (including finials). Each vase weighs approximately 15.5 pounds. Lampshades not included, photo props only.
