Vienna Secession Wall Lights and Sconces

VIENNA SECESSION STYLE & WIENER WERKSTÄTTE

At the turn of the 20th century, Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann and several of their peers separated from the predominant Association of Austrian Artists to form a new professional union, the Vienna Secession.

The artists’ intent to break free from classical traditions in fine art evolved to encompass applied arts and interior design as well: In 1903, Hoffmann and Koloman Moser founded the Wiener Werkstätte, or "Viennese Workshop," to produce progressive furniture, ceramics, glass and textiles.

This talented collective of Austrian artists, architects and designers most famously created works in the Jugendstil style — the German branch of Western Europe's popular Art Nouveau. Jugendstil is associated with dynamic, rhythmic forms and undulating lines.

On 1stDibs, discover the sophisticated Vienna Secession furniture, art and decorative objects — ranging from watercolor paintings and prints to serveware and seating — that transformed Austria over one hundred years ago and maintain timeless appeal today.

19th Century Wien Wall Lamp with 7 Lights in Antique Bronze and Crystal
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
This wall lamp is inspired by a chandelier model of Josef Hoffmann (architect and designer member of the Viennese Secession). Indeed, the lower part of the sconce, composed of three palm leaves adorned with drops, is close to that of the Austrian architect’s successful model. However, the composition is more complex than its original. A light plate, whose ornaments recall the eighteenth century, completes the stage of palms, itself topped by a shell. The latter opens on three floors in half-crown, decorated with drops. These crowns are reminiscent of the chandeliers of Central European countries (one thinks of the chandelier of Werner and Mieth in the Russian taste, dating from the nineteenth century and preserved in the Mathieu Museum), as well as the edges of the shell take the form of lava flow. Skillfully mixing these three parts, this wall lamp offers a very soft light, thanks to the crystal drops acting as a louver. We have one wall lamp...

1970s German Small Peill & Putzler Wall or Ceiling Glass Lights, 3 Available
Located in London, GB
Unusual 1970s German Peill & Putzler wall lights which could also be used as ceiling flush mounts for a small room perhaps a bathroom/cloackroom or along a hallway with a low ceiling. The circular glass shade is secured to the aluminium fitting with a bolt in the centre which sits inside the decorative chrome knob and disc. A single E27 screw in bulb sits within the shade. The design is wonderful with sandblasted oval-shaped lozenges which grow smaller and change shape towards the centre - "ever decreasing lozenges" - with the smallest one creating a flower around the chrome disc. I have seen this light attributed to Kalmar Lighting and Glashutte Limburg but I am pretty certain it's Peill & Putzler. I am happy to stand corrected if anyone knows better. In very good vintage condition with some small scratches to the chrome disc in the centre and the odd tiny mark to the sandblasted lozenges which are barely noticeable. Rewired by a professional electrician and in full working order. I also have one larger version which is 30cm in diameter with the exact same design on the Retro Living...
