Pair of original O.C. White type "C" adjustable wall fixture / task lamp. Also called type "Y" because of the bracket shape. Base arm measures 36", extension arm measures 24", shade measures 5 1/4" in length, and wall bracket measures 4 1/2" x 5 3/4". One of the brackets has a professional repair.
In the late 19th century, noting the functional inefficiencies of medical lighting, Dr. Otis C. White, a dental surgeon from Hopkinton, Massachusetts, began patenting a variety of his now-iconic adjustable electric-lighting fixtures. O.C. White began to design lamps for desk use, physician’s exam units, hospital floor lamps, and fixtures for the stitching trade.
The company was cited by the U.S. government for its part in “helping to produce victory over the enemy” during WWI and WWII. Throughout the postwar era, O.C. White cornered the market for OEM machine lighting for a host of major American machine builders including New Britain Machine Company (right here in Connecticut), Cincinnati Milling Machine Company, and Bryant Chucking Grinder Company.
The original factory located in Worcester, Massachusetts—one of the early hubs of industry— was utilized until 1980. O.C. White has earned a reputation for the unparalleled quality of its lasting design and function. Early fixtures like the ones we have to offer are highly sought after rarities that can be found in luxury antique shops.
