About the Item
French designer Matali Crasset has created a lamp based on traditional railway lighting for IKEA's PS 2017 collection.
Crasset took inspiration from classic hand-held railway lanterns for the design.
"I've always been interested in different types of transport and been fascinated by how magical it must have been when we got light indoors," said the designer, who previously designed a grid-patterned wardrobe for IKEA's 2014 PS collection.
"So it's maybe not surprising that I was inspired by old railway lights when I created the LED multi-use light in the IKEA PS 2017 collection."
A pair of handles lets the LED lamp be carried or hung, and a circular break in the grid-patterned cage allows room for the light to shine without interruption. The steel surrounding also allows the lamp to be placed on its side.
Crasset has previously created claw-like jewellery, modular furniture and concrete lamps shaped like military listening devices.
The design, which can function as a floor or table light, features a torch-shaped red lamp encased in a powder-coated steel cage.

J’aime la façon dont il propose la domestication de la source LED qui est plutôt froide et efficace. Elle est ici présentée avec une forme interface qui nous la rend préhensile. C’est aussi un peu comme si on voulait mettre le minimum de matière en l’évidant : les lampes LED nous permettent de consommer moins, le corps de l’objet se met à l’unisson. Certains objets deviennent immatériels, mais notre culture a été en partie définie par notre capacité à décoder les formes mais aussi l’aspect symbolique des objets. Il nous faut des objets de transition qui nous permettent de voir encore et aussi de manipuler. C’est un produit qui permet l’appropriation, il se déplace et se pose où nous avons besoin. C’est un objet humble et serviable à la fois. Il se pose, il s’accroche… toujours prêt, on retrouve cette complicité avec un objet dont la fonction est hors du temps, mais dont la présence est réactualisée. MATALI CRASSET.
