Caccia Dominioni Pier Luigi Italian Mid Century Wall Light in Brass 1960s
About the Item
A circular wall light in brass and opaline Pier Luigi Caccia Dominioni.
Luigi Caccia Dominioni was born in Milan on 7 December 1913, in the family home in Piazza Sant'Ambrogio, a house he rebuilt after it was destroyed in the bombing of August 1943. A cousin of Paolo Caccia Dominioni, he belonged to the historic Milanese noble family of Caccia Dominioni, originally from Novara
He completed his entire cycle of studies, up to classical high school, at the Leone XIII Institute in Milan, run by the Jesuits. In 1931 he enrolled in the Faculty of Architecture at the Regio Istituto Tecnico Superiore (future Milan Polytechnic). During his university studies, he met Livio and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Cesare Cattaneo, Giannino Bernasconi - the future BBPR - and had Luigi Moretti and Piero Portaluppi as teachers. He graduated in 1936 and qualified as a professional architect in Venice. In 1937, with his brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, he opened a professional studio: together with them he took part in various competitions, obtaining brilliant results. His first achievement in the field of industrial design, together with them, dates back to 1938 and concerns some models of radio sets for Phonola, later perfected and presented in 1940 at the 7th Milan Triennale; at the Triennale the three architects also made themselves known for the preparation of exhibitions and the production of other design objects, such as the Miracoli cutlery.
Dominioni did his military service from 1939 to 1943. From 1945 he resumed his activity as an architect, first with his colleague Castiglioni, then, from 1946, with his own practice, in partnership with the Marquises Porro and Brizzi. His professional activity ranged from design to architecture and took place mainly in Milan.
In 1947, with Ignazio Gardella and Corrado Corradi he founded Azucena, for which he created hundreds of design objects. He received the Compasso d'oro award several times, including for the "C.d.o." chair and in 1984 for the Super door. His extensive architectural production, characterised by his ability to dialogue with the pre-existing buildings without renouncing the use of new forms and technologies, began with the construction of the family home in Piazza Sant'Ambrogio in Milan (1947-49), followed by the B.V.A. institute in Via Calatafimi (1948-54), the Loro-Parisini in Via Savona (1951-57), the office and housing complexes in Corso Europa and Corso Italia (1953-66 and 1953-59), the Santa Maria alla Porta building (1961), the Cartiere Binda building (1966), the connection between the San Fedele church and the Manhattan Bank in Piazza Meda (1969), the residential buildings in Via Ippolito Nievo and Piazza Carbonari (1955-56 and 1960-61), the complex in San Felice with Magistretti (1967-75), the Vanoni Library in Morbegno (1965-66), the Oxford Building in Corso Milano in Monza (1963) and the Church of San Biagio in Monza (1968) and the two towers in the Principality of Monaco (1976-80).
The 1980s continued with the Monticello complex (begun in the 1970s), the one in Morbegno with the church of San Giuseppe, and the arrangement of the elevated pedestrian paths at the Milan Fairgrounds.
