Rare Sculptural 'Ritto' Floor Lamp by Leonardi & Stagi for Lumenform, 1972
$6,000

About
A beautiful and rare example of the highly sculptural 'Ritto' floor lamp finished in its original and strikingly elegant midnight, 'Prussian blue', almost black, enameled steel.
Designed in 1972 by Modena architects, Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi, the Avant Garde 'Ritto' lamp was produced in very limited numbers by Lumenform of Venice, Italy.
The 'Ritto' floor lamp allows for great flexibility in both the height, concentration and spread of light by merely altering the relative positions of each lamp within the thirteen available circular openings to create the ambience required by the user. Each lamp has its on own individual on/off switch too. The August 1973 issue of the italian design journal 'Rivista dell Arredamento' confirms that the 'Ritto' lamp should be fitted with crown silvered bulbs which prevent glare and create a nice soft, warm and subtle lighting effect as well as being more visually attractive when the lamps are off.
Each lamp is simply inserted into one of the 13 available circular openings in the vertical frame and is held in position by a simple spring clip, please see image 4. A wonderfully simple and elegant solution resulting in a highly creative combination of practicality and flexibility contained within a highly sculptural and graphic form.
This example is completely original and importantly complete retaining both the original lamps with their original independent on/off switches as originally designed. Complete examples of this rare design arevery hard to find today, often one of the lamps or spung retaining clips has gone missing over the years. The midnight blue enamel is also completely original and has not been touched up or refinished. The enamel is in lovely condition overall, there is one small spot of enamel loss to the lower edge of one of the circular openings, please see image 8, commensurate with age and use. This small area could be easily touched in but we have decided to leave the lamp completely original as this small area does not distract from the beauty of the lamp.
The 'Ritto' floor lamp is a Minimalist masterpiece in line with Leonardi and Stagi's other minimalist sculptural form classics, the hugely sought after and iconic 'dondolo' rocking chair designed in 1967 and the equally stunning 'CL9' ribbon lounge chair designed in 1961 whose free flowing continuous sculptural form was influenced by a Max Bill sculpture they saw together at the Venice Biennale.
This rare Avant Garde design was published in the November 1973 issue of casa vogue, please see image 2 as well as in the Krzentowski's bible on Classic modern lighting design 'The Complete Designers’ lights (1950-1990).
