About the Item

Hekla, pendant by Jón Ólafsson and Petur B Lúthersson in 1962, and put into production by Fog & Mørup in 1964, rare and very attractive Scandinavian Modern light. This is a rare find and collectors item, especially in this excellent vintage condition! A large hemispherical shaped pendant, comprised of 11 white aluminium circles with bands for rim, arranged on top of each other to create an outer dome shape with an inside pyramid. The layered aluminium circles conceal the bulb socket, while giving way for light to be reflected onto their white surface, while the wide bottom allows for a direct flow of light downwards, the result is a beautiful massive hemisphere with an impressive sense of lightness to it. The shape change as you move around the pendant or when idle versus lit, a true architectural beauty. The Hekla is the result of a creative partnership between two (Icelandic) architecture students, Jón Ólafsson and Petur Lúthersson in 1962, as they entered a design competition. Both studied at the Royal Danish Academy of fine Arts and Architecture in Copenhagen and wanted to created a good lighting design, that was able to packed flat for easy transport. They started with cutting cardboard in creative ways, creating models and finally submitted a design for the competition and won first prize. The name, Hekla, as well as the dome shape is inspired by one of the most active volcanoes on Iceland, Hekla. The pendant went quickly put into production by Fog & Mørup and the first examples hung in the flagship store in the early 1964. It remained in production to the end of the 1970s, and only an estimated 15000 pieces were ever produced. A gorgeous rare piece that would suit any dining table, kitchen table or even office space with its simple lines, organic shape and architectural beauty. Condition: This Hekla is in rare excellent vintage condition with very few signs of usage and age, please see the photos! All original, but rewired with 2 m (6' 6.7") high end black white cord, for safety and beauty. Tested and fully functional. Cleaned, labelled and packed in protective bag. Light source: One bulb, Edison screw-fitting (E27/E26) max 150 Watt.
