David Krynauw, "Jeppestown Waiting Bench", Wenge and Cowhide String

Estimated Production Time9-10 weeks

About

This Jeppestown bench is made from Wenge, a dark hardwood indigenous to South Africa, strung with leather "riempies" (Afrikaans for 'thongs') that were traditionally used to make seats by Dutch settlers in the Cape. It is a playful evolution of David Krynauw's linear "Jeppestown Waiting Bench", using the same interlocking method created and patented by this master wood-worker. Its energetic interplay of crisp slanting lines was inspired by the urban energy of the historic Jeppestown neighbourhood of Downtown Johannesburg. Uncompromising attention to quality, detail and originality is what sets Johannesburg-based Krynauw’s work apart. His studio draws inspiration from the method behind the work and this is where the focus rests. A desire for a fresh approach leads to experimentation with different shapes and forms to produce unconventional and inspiring pieces, the team’s overarching aim being a consistent drive toward expanding its capabilities and pushing the boundaries of the chosen medium. David Krynauw’s iconic "Haywire" chandelier was awarded the Object that Moves Award by the Southern Guild Design Foundation in 2014 and continues to be a globally sought-after piece. Krynauw is the recipient of 100% Design South Africa’s Designer of the Year Award 2015.

About The Maker

Southern Guild

View Profile
Southern Guild has spearheaded the high-end design category in Africa, propelling its artist-designers to make spirited, challenging and complex work. Its highly curated exhibitions have redefined global perceptions of African design and escalated its value on the international market. Since being founded in 2008 as the sole gallery representing locally made limited-edition design, Southern Guild has birthed a new category for artists and designers in South Africa. In 2011 it became the first African gallery to present at Design Miami, and in 2015 it was the first to be featured at Christie’s London’s annual design auction. The gallery shows regularly at Design Miami in Basel and the US, at Design Days Dubai and the Collective Design Fair in New York, resulting in sales to leading architects, top collectors and respected museums. It has had work from its collections included in Vitra Design Museum’s “Making Africa” exhibition and “Beauty–Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial” at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Against the backdrop of a design industry that is still fairly young, Southern Guild gives designers a platform to reimagine what is possible. Founders Trevyn and Julian McGowan are embedded in the South African cultural landscape and play integral roles in guiding, advising and mentoring designers.
