About the Item

A 9-arm chandelier or pendant light attributed to Josef Frank, manufactured in 1930s. It is made of wood and brass which got a wonderful patina during time. The white lamp shades have been renewed on base of the original ones. There are nine original ceramic sockets for medium or standard screw base bulbs. The current overall drop is 55 inch / 140 cm but the chain can be shortened to any length for free of charge. In the year 1925 Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach founded a furnishing company in the heart of Vienna named 'Haus & Garten' (engl. 'House & Garden'). With their functional furniture and colorful textiles, the two architects are not just sold everyday items, they created a forward-looking lifestyle. Haus & Garten was taken over by Kalmar & Co. (Julius Theodor Kalmar). The offered light problably was made by 'Haus & Garten' or later by Kalmar. A similar light with curved arms was used by Josef Frank in 1934, documented in Martina Wallner, Haus & Garten - Frank & Wlach, Ein Beitrag zur österreichischen Wohnkultur, p. 129. About Kalmar: Founded in Vienna by Julius August Kalmar in 1881, Kalmar first specialized in the production of handcrafted objects of cast bronze. After the turn of the century, Julius Theodor Kalmar, son of the original founder, studied under the renowned Austrian architect and designer Josef Hoffmann. In the following years the company realized modern lighting concepts and designs. Kalmar worked together with the Austrian Werkbund and the most important Austrian architects like Josef Frank, Oskar Wlach, Oswald Haerdtl, Clemens Holzmeister, Ernst Plischke, and Oskar Strnad. Kalmar used traditional materials like glass, bronze, brass, and wood. His designs, including this chandelier, lacked ornament but favored instead a purist aesthetics. Kalmar produced lightings of great craftsmanship, high quality workmanship, and timeliess design.
