About the Item

Large cased Murano glass pendant by the Italian designer Alessandro Pianon for Vistosi, Italy, 1960. Dimensions: height of the lamp: 11.0 in. (28 cm), diameter orange glass: 19.7 inches (50 cm). From ceiling till drop: 35.0 inches (89 cm). The fixture is equipped with the original, regular (E26-E27) Edison screw lamp socket. Max. 70 Watt. The electric parts are in a very good condition. The pendant on offer was designed by one of Vistosi’s most prolific designers: Alessandro Pianon (1931-1984). Pianon was trained as an architect and designer at the Architecture Institute in his hometown Venice. Just like many other Venetian artists Pianon ventured into glass design, as he joined Murano based Vetreria Vistosi in 1956. Starting out by drawing the Vistosi logo, Pianon went on to design several lighting fixtures and the famous Pulcino birds for the company. After Pianon opened his own design studio in 1962, he got assigned by a number of other Italian lighting companies as well, like Lumenform (Venice) and Caprotti (Monza). This particular model, which was given the Vistosi factory code L121, was designed around 1960. The large mouth blown orange shade, executed in the incamiciato (overlay) technique, is supported by an opalescent white balloon, which in turn is being held by a brushed metal holder. Since a Murano sticker is still present on the shade and both the glass and metal parts are in an excellent condition we assume that the lamp has never been used. The Vistosi family has been active in the field of art glass for over three centuries. Fascinated by the esthetics and production methods of modern design, Gugliemo Vistosi opened his own glassworks on the Murano island in 1945. By attracting excellent artists like Gae Aulenti, Vico Magistretti, Angelo Mangiarotti and Ettore Sottsass the company became a well known name over the last decades. Though Gugliemo’s nephews Luciano (1931-2010) and Gino (1925-1980), who joined the company by the mid 1950’s, played and equally important role in establishing this reputation by designing a large number of outstanding lamps. Demonstrative of a unique marriage between artistry and technical excellence, Vistosi lighting fixtures were born from a rich Italian glassmaking tradition. The prolific glass manufacturer came to prominence after World War II for its modernist lighting designs, and today Vistosi is known for opulent chandeliers, lamps and sconces.

The history of Vistosi reaches as far back as 1640, when the Gazzabin family of Murano opened a furnace for producing Murano glass art. "Vistoso," which was originally a nickname, became part of the family's surname and eventually the name “Vistosi” was used to refer to the family’s glass creations.

Vistosi would be recognized by the glassmakers’ guild in Murano during the late 18th century — with Gio-Batta Vistosi becoming head of the guild — but Napoleon dissolved the Venetian state and closed the region’s glass factories by 1807. The modern iteration of the Vistosi company was founded in Murano in 1945 by Guglielmo Vistosi, a Gazzabin family heir.

During the 1950s, Vistosi's grandchildren, Gino and Luciano Vistosi, began specializing in lighting. In the 1960s and ‘70s, the company worked with renowned Italian furniture designers like Adalberto Dal Lago, Ettore Sottsass and Gae Aulenti. One of Vistosi's most famous collaborations was with Italian architect and designer Angelo Mangiarotti. In 1967, Mangiarotti designed a modular crystal-hook lighting system called Giogali that has enjoyed popularity and acclaim to this day.

In 1989, Vistosi was taken over by businessman Giancarlo Moretti, who had an extensive background in the lighting industry. Moretti's son, Matteo Moretti, reinvigorated the business with a series of new design collaborations in 1993. Some of the most notable partnerships included Chiaramonte and Marin, Mauro Olivieri and Michele De Lucchi.

Vistosi has participated in every Euroluce showcase since the lighting exhibition began in 1976. In 2005, the company won the ADI Design Index award for Mangiarotti's Giogali system. In 2007, Vistosi won the Eurispes award and participated in a Compasso d'Oro competition.

Today, Vistosi is still a leader in the lighting industry, shifting to LED and creating new types of lead-free crystal glass for its stunning range of lighting fixtures.
