19th Century Louis XV Style Ormolu and Cut-Glass Chandelier by Mottheau et Fils

About the Item

A very fine and rare French 19th century Louis XV style ormolu-mounted and cut-glass eight-light chandelier with a suspended bell-shaped blown-glass candle-bowl, by Mottheau et Fils, Paris. The circular finely chased gilt bronze frame, in satin and mercury-gold finish, issuing four pairs of foliate scrolled candle-arm branches all draped with festoons of beads and pendants (electrified). The glass bowl with a single-candle candelabrum. Stamped: E. MOTTHEAU - PARIS. Paris, circa 1890. About Mottheau et Fils: The firm of Mottheau & Fils is best known for their high quality light fixtures and it's torchère lumineuse' that was exhibited at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. The monumental torchère executed in onyx and with gilt bronze mounts was designed by the renown French sculptor Eugène-Frédéric Piat (France, 1827-1903). The firm specialized primarily in a wide selection of fine and elaborate lighting fixtures, chandeliers, wall lights and candelabra, all of which, with the introduction of the electricity, flourished in this market. The firm also continued to offer a wide array of household furnishings and decorative items. An article in the Art Journal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris read: "The French Section shows many examples of fine work applied under the new conditions, but we doubt if a more complete success is to be recorded to the credit of any exhibitor than can be conceded to Messieurs Mottheau et fils". The Art Journal (Architecture and Industrie' Section, London, 1900, pp. 86-7). References: Wilson, Gillian ed. French Furniture and Gilt Bronzes. "Baroque and Regence" Catalogue of the J.
