19th Century Large Swiss Folk Art Carving of a Leaping Bull

About the Item

A very large and extremely imposing 19th century Swiss Folk Art carving of a Leaping Bull. Formerly hung under the overhanging eaves of a butcher's shop (chalet) in Bulle, Switzerland. The butchers trading about fifty years ago and the sign was put into storage. This magnificent bull is carved in wood and modeled fully all round. Covered with layers of black paint and in places some gesso. The eyes are glass and the horns fashioned in brass, now patinated. The handcrafted integral strengthening brackets still visible.
