19th Century Folk Art Wartime Relationship Commemorative Plaque

About the Item

19th century Folk Art Wartime relationship commemorative plaque We are proud to offer a rare and unique commemorative wartime relationship plaque, depicting handcrafted sections and scenes, including an old ruined castle, Irish crested plaque joined by an American and French flag detailed with lead material stars, and to the right of the plaque a ruined house with primitive painted houses and trees in the background signed Killoff Castle. A twisted rope carved frame and all hand painted with the message stating, “to Mr Bownam from FW Powell” We assume this rare folk-art plaque would likely have been a gift of sorts from FW Powell to Mr Bownam, in exchange for shelter or just a friendship that formed in wartime. Quite a remarkable untouched piece of true folk art and a complete one-off example. Dimensions in inches: H 14” x W 34.5” x D 0.5” Age: 1880 Origin: Unknown Condition: This item is completely solid in structure and form, fading of color with a strong patination, wear across the surface is present due to the age of this item. Its strongly suggested to review all close-up photos and propose questions before purchasing to avoid any disappointment.

Early 19th century religious folk art scene We share what we love, and we love this early 19th century folk art hand carved example of a painted shepherd religious scene. Detailed on pine base with a cow, angel, house, and shepherd holding a walking stick. Naïve in construction yet a piece of religious art in our opinion. Likely to have been part of a religious display...

  • Late 17th/Early 18th Century Polychrome Tobacconist Figure Sign Folk Art Carving
    Located in Lowestoft, GB
A large carved and polychrome painted tobacconist's figure almost certainly 17th or early 18th century For a related example see Edward H. Pinto, Treen and other Wooden Bygones, Bell and Hyman, London 1969. Page 412, plate 436. Originally this may well have been a tobacconist's shop window figure. For a similar, but slightly earlier unpainted example, see Sotheby's, The W. J. Shepherd collection of treen, 30th November 1983, Lot 393, illustrated in Pinto "Wooden Bygones of Smoking and Snuff Taking", plate 1. Carved wooden figures, often painted, were placed outside tobacconist's shops as signs from the 17th century onwards. The earliest of these figures is the 'black boy' or 'blackamoor'. 'At the sign of the black boy' or 'at the sign of the blackamoor' was a popular address for tobacconists since the early 17th century. The 17th century figures...
