Washington D.C. Vintage Pennsylvania Railroad Poster, circa 1935

About the Item

This is a vintage, first edition rail poster by artist Walter Calvert, printed for the Pennsylvania Railroad, circa 1955. The Pennsylvania Railroad was founded in 1846. Commonly referred to as the “Pennsy,” the PRR was headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The PRR was the largest railroad in the U.S. for the entire first half of the twentieth century, and was an extremely passenger-oriented railroad. Train travel allowed Americans the ability to leave their towns, head into a city, or escape from it as needed. Vacations became a notion that the general public could partake in, via affordable weekend train escapes. During in this boom in train travel, countless posters were created to highlight the historic, cultural, and natural beauty of each destination. Often bright, exciting, these graphic posters would feature landmarks and key tourist spots, emphasizing the myriad of new places to explore. In this poster we are encouraged to “Go By Train” to see some of the tourist sites in Washington, D.C. including the Capitol Dome, Washington Monument, White House, National Gallery and the Supreme Court. Walter Calvert was a commercial artist, who lived and worked in Pennsylvania. Calvert was a member of the Art Directors Club of Philadelphia and was commissioned by the Pennsylvania Railroad, Bell Telephone, Philadelphia Electric Company and other companies to provide artwork for their advertising campaigns. Condition: This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. No rips or tears, and paper is healthy. Color is original to the poster and still vibrant. Poster has been framed to archival standards, in a custom black and gold frame. Framed dimensions: 44" H x 28 7/8" W x 2 1/4" D.
