This is an original vintage Hermès scarf by designer Hugo Grygkar, circa 1976. The scarf is entitled "Arms of the United States" and depicts all of the state seals of the 50 American states. The scarf design was first issued in 1955, and was later reissued in celebration of the United States' bicentennial in the year 1976 in honor of the 200th year anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The design features the 50 states seals in bright gold coloring, set against a deep red background and royal blue border. An inset map of the United States is featured in red in the center. The iconic Hermès copyright mark is printed at bottom in black. This colorway allows for very stark contrasts and features the colors of the American flag; red, white, and blue. Hugo Grygkar (1907-1959) was a famous designer, illustrator and commercial artist during the 20th century. This original oil painting on canvas, entitled American Flags, was painted by Dennis Lyall in 1988. The work originally appeared in the Fleetwood Triptych panel for the U.S. Flag stamps series. Lyall signed the work underneath the rightmost flag. Presented in a simple black archival frame, the painting depicts several variations of the American flag throughout the country’s history. Dennis Lyall, the artist, was born in Iowa and attended the University of Kansas. As a student, Lyall was awarded a Gold Medal by the Society of Illustrators. Afterwards, he worked as an illustrator for many years on advertisements for companies such as Nabisco, National Geographic Magazine, and NBC. Lyall is perhaps most known for his contributions to stamp design. Overall, the U.S. Postal Service has issued 34 stamps using his designs. This painting is one such example of his artwork that was used for the U.S. Flags stamp series. Lyall has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Society of Illustrators in New York City and his works are part of the permanent collections of the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Air Force, and more. Artfully depicting several variations of the American flag, this painting reminds us that the flag we know today is only one of many different flags throughout the country’s history. Presented is a custom collage featuring signatures from some of the most influential American Navy admirals in World War II. Included is a typed letter signed by Chester Nimitz, a card signed by Raymond Spruance, a photo autographed by William Halsey, and a photograph signed and inscribed by Jack Fletcher. All elements are framed together in a custom built archival frame. Chester Nimitz (1885-1966) was an American admiral, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II, and largely responsible for the successful "island-hopping" campaign against the Japanese. His portrait is shown at the top right and a typed letter on five-star admiral letterhead thanks Gordon Ringer for a copy of his poem. Nimitz signed the bottom of the letter in pencil. William F. “Bull” Halsey (1882-1959) was an American admiral who led the task force attack on the Marshall and Gilbert islands and became commander of Allied naval forces in South Pacific commanding at the Solomon Islands and Leyte Gulf. Featured in the collage is a portrait of Halsey signed at the bottom right in black ink, “W.F. Halsey.” Frank Jack Fletcher (1885-1973) was an American admiral who fought in the first three carrier battles in history: Coral Sea, Midway, and Eastern Solomons. He and his crew stayed out at sea in the Pacific immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor and successfully halted the progress of the Japanese Imperial Navy...
