Massachusetts Goldeneye Hen Decoy, circa 1920s

About the Item

Early vintage goldeneye ("whistler") hen decoy, from Massachusetts, circa 1920s, having a solid carved pine wide body with sloping tail, the hand whittled head with long neck set on shelf, nice contour to head with painted eyes. The decoy is structurally sound, there is an old crack in the neck but it is solid as a rock. There are the remnants of two original leather straps nailed to the bottom fore and aft for line ties. It is in old working paint with what looks like only one second coat, thin enough to almost look like original paint, except where heavier on the black back and white wing patches. There are very minor scrapes and chips to the paint, and overall there is a great warm patina from honest age. Best of all, the carving and high head alert posture give this decoy a tremendous saucy attitude. Definitely a redhead! Measures: 6-3/4 in H x 12-1/2 in L x 5-1/2 in W.
