About

Hand painted terracotta pot by Dolores Porras (1937-2010) employing her iconic mermaid motif. Signed, 1970s. Black iron metal base is not original. We can ship with or without. About the artist From the age of thirteen, Porras dedicated her vital force to pottery in the town of Santa María Atzompa, Oaxaca, Mexico, known for its jade green-glazed pottery, which has been made the same way for generations. In the 1970s, Porras gained notoriety when she went against convention and pioneered the production of multicolored glazed pottery. She taught herself how to paint on clay pieces, starting with red and white washes. Later, she added blues, greens, grays and oranges. When she began to produce the new pieces, she was considered to be crazy by her local peers, but before long, her pieces were selling worldwide - many of them her iconic pots and bowls with mermaid images with details in high and low relief. Porras also took advantage of pastillaje techniques, mixing new forms and figures over traditional models, creating a style of her own that defined her production.
