Exceptional Race Horse Game Wheel by HC Evans, Chicago, circa 1920-1950
Located in York County, PA
EXCEPTIONALLY GRAPHIC AND COLORFUL RACE HORSE GAME WHEEL, MADE BY H.C. EVANS, CHICAGO, CA 1920-50 Elaborately embellished race horse gaming wheel, made by Evans & Company in Chicago. Each of the wheel's 10 panels are brightly colored lithographs behind glass, framed by lengths of decorative metal trim, cast from an alloy that appears to be comprised of copper mixed with zinc or aluminum. This may have at one time been nickel plated. The four crown-shaped center panels are fancifully paint-stenciled mirror, framed with the same trim and tipped with whimsical stars. Numbers that run around the outer edge of the wheel, which functioned like a ball-in-cage lottery, with payouts that alternated based on the changing number in the cylindrical tower. This is spring-driven and interesting to witness when in operation. The wooden post that supports the wheel is polychrome-painted wood, has a cast steel, tripod base and breaks down for transport. The frame of the wheel is heavy laminate wood, 1 3/4" thick, with metal spokes cast from an alloy similar the trim. The wheel is signed on the giant cast and nickel-plated washer in the center. This reads "H.C. Evans & Co.; Chicago, Ill." Established in 1892, the firm was incorporated in 1907. By 1909 it was located at 125 Clark Street. By the 1920s, it had moved to 1528 West Adams Street. In 1929 it claimed to be the oldest firm of its kind in existence and, at 52,000 square feet, maintained the largest factory in the world engaged in the exclusive manufacture of the types of products for which it was known. When an Evans wheel...

Carnival Ball Tossing Knockdowns, French, circa 1910
Located in Incline Village, NV
Smaller type "portable" carnival bean toss game with three figures; a Frenchman on one end, an Asian looking gentleman on the other end, and a clown in the middle. all are wearing their period original clothing in excellent condition. The hand painted papier mâché faces are also in excellent and original hand painted condition; quite extraordinary considering they are waiting to be knocked down by a ball or a bean bag. The top canopy is hand painted blue and the thin curtain wood border is hand painted in red; there are some applied gold "stars" but most of them are missing (see image). This type of game would have been prevalent at carnivals during the turn of the century and later. The original brightly colored lithographed paper front, consists of an old lady and her black cat standing in the doorway; and two targets in place atop the painted picket fence with a garden behind. This is attached to a wood frame. This frame is also attached, in an easel like fashion, to another wood frame that folds down flat; a piece of string holds it on one side from opening all the way when it is put "in play". The French looking figure, in conjunction with the popularity of these carnival games...

Antique and Vintage Carnival Art

The collection of original antique and vintage carnival art on 1stDibs includes paintings and posters that promoted traveling carnivals and circuses of years past as well as masks, sculptures and other works of folk art associated with widespread public celebrations that mark the start of harvest season or are rooted in religion.

The concept of “Carnival” is linked to an event that precedes Lent, the season of preparation before Easter for Christians (it may also have roots in Ancient Rome’s pagan Saturnalian festival), while the modern traveling carnival that we know — i.e., amusement fairs — existed during the 19th century in North America. The Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 was pivotal to these traveling amusement fairs.

Some of the most famous celebrations of Carnival around the world include Karneval in Germany, Carnival in Brazil and Mardi Gras in the United States. Carnival in Barbados is a traditional harvest festival. The bright colors, the caricatured masks and floats and the over-the-top nature of Carnival continue to enthrall millions across the globe.

Carnivals have always given way to impressive displays of creativity and folk art. Folk art is art created by people who are not classically trained for either utilitarian or decorative purposes. With respect to visual art in folk art, it refers to work that is reflective of a community’s culture and usually handmade by craftspeople working within a popular tradition.

Carnival art reflects the way different cultures celebrate or mark an important community event. Some examples of Carnival art include fabric dolls and marionettes that are used to tell stories and capture your imagination. Antique dolls make for striking collectibles positioned for display on any shelf in your home, while carnival masks make a bold statement as wall art. A collection of masks could create an elevated accent wall in a living room or dining room.
