Provenance: From the Collection of Guillot Munoz Additional documentation accompanying the piece: - Certificat d'Expertise of Serge Reynes - Certificat de Provenance - European Passport Alvaro Guillot-Muñoz Coming from a large Uruguayan family, Alvaro Guillot Muñoz had a rich and varied career. Alternately writer, paleontologist, Americanist (specialist of pre-Columbian art) and diplomat, Alvaro Guillot Muñoz was also minister plenipotentiary of Uruguay. Driven from his country after the coup of the dictator Gabriel Terra in 1933, Alvaro Guillot-Muñoz fled to Argentina where he holds the prestigious chair of paleontology at the University of La Plata. After the fall of the regime in 1938, he returned to Uruguay and was appointed cultural attaché to Brazil. At this time he is passionate about pre-Columbian cultures. He deepened his knowledge of pre-Columbian art by making numerous trips to Peru and Ecuador. He was one of the first researchers to focus on certain ritual and everyday objects, such as the Valdivia stelae. From his travels, he brings back the first objects of his collection which he will continue to enrich during 50 years. In 1950, he joined his friend Paul Rivet in Paris (Rivet was then director of the Museum of Man), and participated in the work on the linguistics of the dead languages of Mesoamerica and on pre-Columbian art. When he passed away in 1971, Alvaro Guillot-Muñoz left his collection to his daughter Julieta Guillot Muñoz and his son-in-law Gerald Berjonneau.
