Albert Chubac, Composition, Spray Paint and Stencils, circa 1960, France
Located in Nice, Cote d' Azur
Albert Chubac (1925-20008), Composition, Spray paint and stencils, Workshop stamp lower right, Framed, circa 1960, France. Measures : Width 50 cm, Height 65 cm. Albert Chubac was born in Geneva in 1920. After studying decorative art, then at the Beaux-Arts in Geneva, he obtained grants to travel to Italy, Algeria, Spain, Egypt and Greece, stages which will mark his work. He settled in 1964 on the Côte d ‘Azur in Aspremont in a very Spartan house, attracted by the light, the sun and the colors of nature. The year 1967 is the year of the establishment of the School of Nice. He will work and exhibit alongside Aman, César, Tinguely, Gilli, Ben, Rayse, etc ... In 1990, it was the consecration with the opening of MAMAC in Nice. Albert Chubac then becomes accessible to the general public. He will use solid primary colors, will develop modifiable structures and then develop the collages in three dimensions. Gradually, he broke away from his classical training and figuration to move towards abstraction through the encounters and influences of contemporary artists. Always in search of simplicity, He will radically limit the plastic means with a reduced palette, geometric shapes and simple gestures to concentrate on minimum conditions of possibility. His work, which lies between constructivism and geometric abstraction, is playful and imbued with the artist's joie de vivre. In 2004, following the major retrospective at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice, he donated around one hundred works to the City of Nice. Albert Chubac died in 2008 in Tourrette-Levens, near Aspremont. Bibliography: - Albert Chubac, MAMAC Nice, Cultures Nice Editions, 2004. - Albert Chubac: exhibition, Nice, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, January 29 - May 16, 2004. - Albert Chubac, Galerie Harter, 2013. - Albert Chubac, a lifetime of artist, Patrick Boussu and Cynthia Lemesle, South Art éditions, 2021. Original 1902 American Playhouse Poster
By U.S. Litho Company
Located in Peekskill, NY
This was an estate find and part of a beautiful collection of rare excellent turn of the century posters. They were hidden away for over a 100 years. About the poster: You'd think that a play called 'The New Baby' might feature said child in its promotional material. But here's the thing, there really isn't a baby at the center of the comedy, and that's the crux of this entertainment. The plot concerns a husband who is so bored with country life that he dreams up the idea of having an illegitimate son in London as a way to get into town for an occasional 'night off'. When his wife decides that the child should be adopted, the expected comic tissue of falsehoods and misunderstandings frays and hilarity ensues. Adapted from German by A. Bourchier, the farce opened in London in 1896 to what a local critic termed 'much mirth'. Several years later, when the play had crossed the Atlantic and entered the repertory of David de Wolf - cleverly called the Baby's 'chaperone' on the poster - and his troupe of travelling players, that understated review was translated into the more American howling success'. The cast and director would've been totally unfamiliar with the British hinterlands, so this splendid design concentrates on the hi-jinks of the characters and their situation.' At the start of the 20th century, America was in the full glory of its cultural adolescence, bursting with energy and optimism. In 1900 in New York there were 33 legitimate Broadway theatres, and many more would be built within the next decade to meet growing audience demand. New York's exploding population was also enjoying increased mobility. In 1904, the city opened its first underground commuter railroad lines. Thanks to these 'subways,' tens of thousands living far from the theatre district could catch a Broadway show and still sleep in their own beds. Add in the ever-increasing numbers of tourists who came into the city by rail and steamship, and it was easy to see why Broadway could now support more productions and longer runs than ever before.' We believe this magnificent and awe inspiring poster typifies the best of musical history and musical posters...

The artist lives and works at Gasperini on the hills between Parma and Piacenza with his beloved dogs. He began to paint in 1969. His first work was merely figurative. Renowned in Italy, Asveri has just finished a solo exhibition in Genoa at the Medioeval “Commenda” and will be presented in Paris next February during the Contemporary Art Fair in Port de Versailles. Recently, the newspaper “Il Sole 24 Ore” (The Italian Economic newspaper) included Asveri among the artists to watch in terms of investment in the Italian Art Market. British Sailor's Woolwork or Woolie of the Named Barque "Polly"
Located in Downingtown, PA
Large British Sailor's Woolwork of the Barque Polly, Named "Polly", Circa 1885-95 A large sailor's woolie or woolwork of a port side view of a ship named "Polly" under full sail. The ship is rigged as a barque. The name "Polly" can be seen on a banner flying from the mainmast and on the front of the bow and the shiop was named after the owner's wife Marian Poyy Woodside. (see below). The sails are trapunto, creating a three-dimensional look of the sails full of wind. The sea is depicted is rippling bands of green and white. Dimensions: Frame: 26 1/4 inches high x 31 inches wide x 2 inches Reference: The ship was built in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1885, and launched by Marian "Polly" Woodside, the wife of the owner, tossing flowers across the bow. (Champagne being too precious). The ship made several voyages primarily between South America and the UK before being repositioned in the Pacific. A barque has three or four masts. The fore and mainmast are square-rigged, and the mizzen fore-and-aft, usually gaff-rigged. Carries a mainsail on each mast, but the mainsail shape differs per mast (square or gaff). Barques were built with up to five masts. Four-masted barques were quite common. Barques were a good alternative to full-rigged ships because they require a lot fewer sailors. But they were also slower. Very popular rig for ocean crossings, so a great rig for merchants who travel long distances and don't want 30 - 50 sailors to run their ship. A label on the reverse states that the wool was on The Antiques Road...

Vintage, New and Antique Folk Art

Folk art refers to a genre of art that shares the creator’s traditions, offering not just an artistic display but an opportunity to learn about a culture. Vintage, new and antique folk art typically reflects a heritage or location. It can include utilitarian objects and handmade art as diverse as weather vanes, portraiture and paintings, carnival art, quilts and duck decoys.

American folk art is frequently valued because of the traditional skills involved, like weaving, hand-carving wood and even stonework. Many folk artists are self-taught, while some train as apprentices within their community. By using available materials and taking a personal approach to their creations, artists ensure each piece is unique and conveys a story. Native American folk art includes functional objects reflecting their heritage, such as baskets, textiles and wooden pieces.

During the Great Depression, artistic materials in America were hard to come by, so artisans used discarded wood from cigar boxes and shipping crates to make highly stylized, notched pieces — most often picture frames and boxes — that are today sought after by collectors. This folk art style is called tramp art and was popular from roughly 1870 until the 1940s.
