Danish Silver Cream Jug & Sugar Bowl by Simon Groth, Copenhagen Circa 1890
About the Item
A very handsome Danish silver (.826 Fine) sugar bowl and cream jug of timeless design. Both showing reeded detail to their rims & bases, together with running bands of neoclassical embossed motifs set against a stippled field, interspersed on either side by a crescent-shaped cartouche. The sugar bowl applied with a finely cast lions mask on either side - the creamer affixed with a neoclassical inspired kylix handle terminating to a palmette motif. Both bearing marks to their exteriors & undersides noting town & date marks for Copenhagen 1890, assay marks for Assay Master Simon Groth (working 1863-1904) and rubbed marks possibly for C. Holm (1893-1937).
Simon Groth worked as Assay Master for Dragsted Jewellers & Silversmiths of Copenhagen who were established in 1854 and listed among its commissions the Royal Court of Copenhagen and the Imperial Court of Russia.
