American Silver Teapot by Paul Revere

This outstanding antique silver teapot was made by the legendary American patriot and silversmith Paul Revere. This particular pot was made for and bears the monogram of respected Boston businessman Samuel Pickering Gardner (1767-1843) and his wife Rebecca Russell Gardner (née Lowel). A similar teapot made by Revere resides in the collection of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston. From the elegance of the swan neck spout to the spherical finial, this teapot serves as a testament to the amazing talents of this legendary artisan and American hero. While his midnight ride made him a legend, it was Paul Revere’s extraordinary work as a silversmith that has left such a lasting mark on the American decorative arts. In fact, Revere was among the very few American silversmiths who had the talent to actually complete a piece of silver from start to finish, including the engraving. Provenance: Rebecca Russell Gardner and Samuel Pickering Gardner, married 1797;descended to their son, George Gardner; descended to his daughter, Clara Gardner Brooks; descended to her daughter, Helen Brooks Emmons, then by descent, Sotheby's New York, June 1994, June 23-24, lot 97. Marked "REVERE" circa 1797. Measures: 10 1/2" wide x 5" deep x 8" high.
