Victorian English Sterling Silver Champagne Cup

$3,989.38

About

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver champagne cup in the tyg style; an addition to our silver presentation collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver tyg style champagne cup has an inverted baluster shaped form onto three paw feet. The lower portion of this antique champagne cup is embellished with impressive fluted decoration in a swirl design emanating from the underside. The upper bulbous portion is embellished with angular pales incorporating a chased scrolling leaf bordered, large vacant cartouche. This Victorian cup is fitted with three impressive scrolling arms, embellished with fluted decoration to the upper socket. The cup is supported by three exceptional and impressive feet, each modelled in the form of a lion's paw and embellished with chased decoration replicating the details of the fur and claws. This impressive cup retains the original gilding. This exceptional example of antique silverware is fitted to the original incurved, shaped painted wood plinth; if required this plinth could be fitted with bespoke sterling silver presentation plaques suitable for a personal engraved inscription. By virtue of its size, this versatile cup could be used as a champagne/bottle cooler or a fine presentation cup. This exceptional cup was crafted by the London silversmiths William Henry Jackson & Walter Chase of Jackson & Chase. A tyg is a large English mug/drinking vessel with three or more handles. The mug was made to be shared and handed round between several drinkers. Condition: This antique bowl is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The embossed and chased decoration is very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the cup are all very clear. Dimensions: Height on plinth 34cm/13.4". Height 25.4cm/10". Diameter of rim 18cm/7.1". Diameter of body 20.4cm/8". Width of plinth 27.6cm/10.9". Weight: 38.2 troy ounces/1187g. Maker: Jackson & Chase (William H Jackson & Walter Chase). Date: 1879. Origin: London, England. Video: A video of this fine piece is available upon request. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silverware.
