RAF Interest, RAF Kingstown, Early Battery Operated Plane Cigar Lighter, 1936

$9,814.05Asking Price

About

Hallmarked in Birmingham in 1936 by Sanders & Mackenzie, this unique, and very rare, early battery operated, George V, sterling silver cigar lighter, takes the form of a propellor plane, mounted on a wooden plinth which bears a plaque with the original inscription. The batteries are contained inside the plinth which is opened from the base, the propeller is removable to allow lighter fluid to be poured in, and the cockpit canopy is opened to reveal the lighter. The cigar lighter measures 4.25"(11cm) tall, by 7.5"(19cm) long with a wing span of 8.5"(22cm). The inscription suggests the lighter was given by Mayor R. S. Harrison and the Carlisle Council. Richard Stanley Harrison was the Mayor of Carlisle from 1936-1937. In 1936 the Carlisle Council sold Kingstown Municipal Airport to the Air Ministry, and it is likely that this rare lighter commemorates the sale. The airport was later remained RAF Kingstown, and was opened in 1938, becoming home to two squadrons flying Fairey Battle Bombers which had only recently been manufactured, having their maiden test flight on the 10th of March 1936. During the war, RAF Kingstown was involved in what is considered to be one of the most audacious attempts of escape by German Prisoners Of War, when two German pilots stole a Miles Magister trainer aircraft from the base, having first escaped from POW camp number 15 in the nearby village of Shap.
