Cigarette Case Fired Enamel with Still Life Miniature Sterling Silver Salimbeni
Located in Firenze, FI
Rectangular table cigarette case with rounded corners in sterling silver 925/1000 gold plated with beautiful miniature fire enamelled and hand painted by the painter Beatrice Mellana reproducing a "still life" by the Flemish painter Willem Claes Heda. Dimensions cm. 5.7 x 9 x 1.7. Weight gr. 174. Designed by Franco Salimbeni in 1969 and manufactured in Florence in numerous specimens with various subjects and different colors, in the headquarters of the Salimbeni Company with completely manual execution by artisan artists with thick slab and large reinforcements suitable for withstanding numerous enamelled firings at about 800° C. Miniature is a very ancient technique which consists of painting works in small proportions. It was born for the decoration of the first letter of the paragraph of the books. Over the years, however, this technique is refined and enriched, then moving on to precious personal items. Hand-painted miniatures can be done with multiple different techniques. The most important that we use on our articles are of three kinds: 1) Fire enamel. 2) Water tempera on an ivory plate. 3) Painted on mother-of-pearl. Fire enameled miniatures: On a first layer of enamel generally white or very clear or even transparent suitably liquefied at a temperature of about 750 ° C, the chosen subject is painted using miniature colors which are as many colored crystals, ground and reduced to a very fine, almost impalpable powder washed and purified in distilled water with the addition of small quantities of deoxidizing acids which, diluted with essential oils (usually essential oil of solder), can be mixed to form a palette of colors. With very fine sable hair brushes you draw the subject starting from the perimeter and then gradually adding various layers of color. It is necessary to carry out various firings very often so that the colors harden and are not absorbed by the underlying glaze as, during the subsequent firings at 750 ° C, during liquefaction, it would spread irremediably. Hence the need to form the painting a little at a time, cooking it numerous times. Therefore it is necessary to proceed with numerous retouching, often overlapping different colors that only the painter's experience knows. A beautiful miniature needs from 20 to over 50 firings and is finished when the painter deems he does not have to further intervene. Some colors must have darker tones than others because then, by superimposing the transparent enamel placed at the end of the miniature, they fade. This transparent layer, called “fondant” in jargon, must be smoothed and polished like all other translucent enamel colors. The miniatures with water tempera colors are painted on real ivory...

Acorn by Georg Jensen Sterling Silver Dinner Flatware Set 12 Service 63 pieces
Located in Big Bend, WI
Gorgeous sterling silver stuns in this rich pattern that features a natural theme reminiscent of old world grace. A classic design yet with an understated touch, this pattern focuses on simple yet refined elegance. The "Acorn" or "Konge" pattern of sterling silver flatware was designed by Johan Rohde in 1915 for Georg Jensen. At one time there were 220 individual pieces in this pattern, but today there is closer to 90 pieces, and remains one of the most iconic Jensen patterns today. Johan Rohde is known for his innovative and unique style. While his patterns are elegant and classic, they are a uniqe version of Art Nouveau and still fit in well with today's world. Johan Rohde became one of the first people to work with Georg Jensen after Rohde had Jensen commission some pieces for his personal collection in 1906. Georg Jensen was impressed so much by his style that he invited him to design a collection. In his favorable Acorn pattern, you can see Rohde used decoration...

Vintage Yogya Silver Kala Bowl by Tom's Silver, circa 1960's, Indonesia
Located in Austin, TX
A bold and well crafted Indonesian Yogya (Jogja, Djokja) silver bowl by Tom's Silver, Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia, circa 1960's. The elegant bowl features a striking design of a Kala face, a protective monster often found above temple doors, and representative of time, death, and rebirth. A pair of makara flank the wide open, smiling mouth. A stylized foliate design surrounds the Kala. Kala are analogous with the Kirtimukha, or face of glory, originating in India and associated with Shiva. Both beings are devourers of evil and tasked with protection The bowl features two beaded borders, and a scalloped rim. The bowl set on three short out-swept feet. Stamped mark to the underside reading "TOM" "800" "DELUX". TOM stands for Tom's Silver, perhaps the most famous silver workshop in Yogyakarta. 800 is the purity of the silver (80%). William Spratling Signed Sterling Silver Feather of Quetzalcoatal Taxco Bracelet
Located in Atlanta, GA
A vintage, circa 1940s signed sterling silver bracelet by William Spratling. This design is called Feather of Quetzalcoatl. According to "Spratling Silver: A Field Guide", by Phyllis Goddard, this bracelet was designed during William Spratling's first design period, 1931-1946. But first things first, who is Quetzalcoatl? According to this Wikipedia article, "The name Quetzalcoatl comes from the Nahuatl language and means "Precious serpent" or "Quetzal-feathered Serpent". In the 17th century, Ixtlilxóchitl, a descendant of Aztec royalty and historian of the Nahua people, wrote, "Quetzalcoatl, in its literal sense, means 'serpent of precious feathers' but in the allegorical sense, 'wisest of men'."" Ah! So that must be why Spratling called this design 'Feather of Quetzalcoatl! But hang on there, how did Spratling come to learn about Quetzalcoatl? Well according to the website Elisa Rolle, "When lecturing at the National University of Mexico's Summer School in 1926-1928, Spratling quickly integrated himself into the Mexican art scene and became a friend and a strong proponent of the work of muralist Diego Rivera, for whom he organized an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Using money received from commissions he organized for Rivera, Spratling bought a home in Taxco, Mexico in 1928, where he began work on a book, Little Mexico, about this small mountain town. Spratling was gay, but most accounts of his life mention this only indirectly if at all. Spratling amassed a large collection of Pre-Columbian figurines...
