Paul Storr, a George III Basket Made in London in 1809 by Paul Storr

US$20,866.61Asking Price

About

This important basket stands on a square stepped base which is decorated with lobing. The broad rectangular main body has a deep bowl and rises to a gadrooned rim interspersed with double Rococo shells, flanked by acanthus foliage and anthemion motifs. Each side displays a scroll handle which is decorated with acanthus foliage and a central palm leaf surrounded by flat fluting. The centre of the bowl displays a contemporary armorial, with crest above, surrounded by a cartouche of foliate scrolls and Rococo shells. The basket is in quite excellent condition, is of a very good weight and is very well marked on the foot. As you will appreciate, it is most unusual to find baskets with two side handles, instead of the more commonly found central swing handle. Examples of this design were not made in large quantities in the Storr workshops and seldom appear on the market. The arms and crest are those of Osborne, as granted to a 16th century Lord Mayor of London. The most prominent branch of his descendants were the now extinct Dukes of Leeds. The inescutcheon of pretense shows the arms of Pynsent, of Urchfont Manor, County Wiltshire. Measures: Height 4.6 inches, 11.5cm. Length 15.8 inches, 39.5cm. Width 10.5 inches, 26.25cm. Weight 67oz.
