The anterior surface of this antique goblet is embellished with a collectable contemporary engraved inscription 'Presented by The Hull & Leith Shipping Compy', To Wm Gavin Esqr Leith as a token of the high sense they entertain of his services to the company, January 1821'*. The upper portion of this exceptional example of George IV silverware is encompassed with a band of flat engraved oak leaf and acorn decoration. The pedestal stem is embellished with moulded decoration to the knops. The foot of this antique silver goblet is encircled with an impressive pin struck and wrigglework leaf decorated border, in addition to an applied gadroon border to the rim. (founded 1816) to form the Hull & Leith Steam Packet Co. and started trading between these two ports. In 1847 they merged with Edinburgh & Dundee Steam Packet Co. to become the Forth & Clyde Shipping Co. Due to the regular sailings between Leith and Hamburg, the company name changed in 1852 to Leith, Hull & Hamburgh (later Hamburg) S. P. Co. The company went forwards and expanded to operate cargo and passenger lines throughout the 19th and the 20th centuries. Condition This antique 1820s Scottish silver goblet is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The decoration is all very crisp.
