Antique 1939 Sterling Silver and Guilloche Enamel Compact

About the Item

A fine and impressive antique George VI English sterling silver and enamel compact with military interest; an addition to our ornamental silverware collection. This fine antique George VI sterling silver and guilloche enamel compact has a circular rounded form. The subtly convex anterior surface is embellished with a blue guilloche enamel panel which reflects a wavy concentric ring design, emanating from the centre of the cover. The front cover retains the original applied silver ornament depicting a Royal Artillery* cap badge including the regimental motto ‘Ubique’ - ‘Everywhere’ and ‘Quo Fas Et Gloria Ducunt’ - ‘Where Right And Glory Lead’. The reverse of the compact, which is also subtly convex in nature, is embellished with engine turned decoration. The compact is fitted with two plain thumb pieces. This antique compact opens to reveal integrated mirror and powder compartments. The Royal Regiment of Artillery (RA) is the artillery arm of the British Army. Condition This antique compact is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition. The enamel to the front cover is in perfect condition. The upper rim of the compact is fitted with an impressive yellow gold chain handpiece, accented with six tubular designs ornamented with further cream and black hot enamel decoration. The interior rim of the antique mirror bears the renowned maker's/retailer's mark 'Tiffany & Co' and the 14ct gold fineness mark (14K). This exceptional Tiffany & Co compact case in gold is fitted to the original hinged leatherette presentation box with a satin and velvet lined interior, securing with a push fit catch; such an example in the original box is rare to the market.     An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Austrian sterling silver and enamel compact with mirror; an addition to our ornamental silverware collection. This exceptional antique Austrian sterling silver gilt and enamel compact mirror has a circular rounded form. The surface of the rounded body is embellished with vibrant turquoise blue guilloche enamel, which reflects undulating concentric ring designs emanating from the centre of the underside. The upper rim of the body is encompassed with an impressive silver gilt chased leaf decorated border. This exceptional Austrian box is fitted with a hinged hallmarked cover, featuring further silver gilt ornamentation to the rim and incorporating a rounded thumbpiece to the anterior surface. The cover is ornamented with an exceptional and collectable enamel scene depicting the SS Orontes* at sea, with a dramatic sun set sky to the background; the lower portion of the scene bears the elucidating title: 'S.S. Orontes'. This impressive compact opens to reveal the original integrated mirror and gilded interior. The maiden voyage of the SS Orontes was a Mediterranean Cruise in June 1929, and the ship furthered its career as a passenger ship operating between England and Australia. During World War II the ship became a troopship, until the end of the war where it was utilised to return Prisoners of War from the Australian camps and back to Europe. The Orontes was refitted in the late 1940s to be used as a single class passenger ship once more, until an unfortunate collision with the SS Empire, where the ship was scrapped in 1962.
