Antique 1912 English Sterling Silver Menu Holders

About the Item

A fine and impressive set of four antique George V English sterling silver and wood menu holders in the form of a single barrelled cannon - boxed; an addition to our dining silverware collection. These fine George V sterling silver menu holders have a rounded rectangular frame onto a plain rectangular base. The holders are individually embellished with sterling silver single barrel cannon on a mound ornaments to the center of the plain frames. The cannon designs are ornamented with chased decoration to reproduce the details of the cannon's chains, rivets in the wheel and terrain texture to the mound. Each holder is fitted to the original and impressive painted wood base, securing to the underside with two hallmarked wing nuts. The underside of each base is fitted with the original leatherette covering and bears the retailer's mark 'Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd, 112 Regent St, W'; these features are a sign of quality. This impressive set of antique menu holders in sterling silver are fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, securing with a push fit catch. The interior of the box bears the retailer's mark 'By appointment to H.M. the King, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd, 112 Regency St London'. Condition These antique menu holders in sterling silver are a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition. The box is also in excellent presentation condition, in keeping with age. The chased decoration is very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the reverse of each support are all very clear. These fine antique George V sterling silver menu card holders have circular shaped bases. Each piece is surmounted with an impressive wishbone* shaped design with a paralleling shaped support. The subtly convex bases are encircled with an elevated scalloped border. The weighted bases of these impressive menu holders are fitted with green baize to the underside. This impressive set of antique silver menu card holders is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, secured with two hinged catches. The interior of the box bears the retailer's mark 'Robert Stewart (Jewellers) Ltd, 75 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow'. A wishbone, otherwise known as the furcular, is a forked bone found in birds and some dinosaurs. The main function of the bone is to provide strength between the neck and breast, to protect the creature during battle. The Ancient Romans perceived this bone as a symbol of luck which allowed the progression of breaking a dried chicken wishbone apart whilst making a wish; this procedure determined the person with the bigger half would receive their wish or have good fortune.
