Antique George III Sterling Silver Sweetmeat Basket

About the Item

A fine and impressive antique George III English sterling silver sweetmeat basket; part of our Georgian silverware collection. This antique Georgian sterling silver sweetmeat basket has an oval navette form onto a collet foot. The body of this sterling silver basket is embellished with a band of pierced decorated vertical pales accented with four foliate motifs. The basket is further ornamented with two bands of pierced evolute scrolling decoration with a scallop and circular motif decorated border. The upper rim and foot of the basket are encircled with applied bead decorated borders. This George III sterling silver basket is fitted with an applied bead decorated swing handle. The well of the basket is embellished with a bright cut engraved crest depicting out of a ducal coronet a wolf's head. The foot of the basket is encompassed with horizontal pierced pale decoration incorporating circular motifs. This antique silver basket with handle, crafted by the renowned London silversmith Robert Hennell I, is a fine example of its type. Dimensions Length 15.5 cm/ 6.2" Width 12 cm/ 4.75" Height to top of handle 12 cm/ 4.75" Weight 4.7 troy ounces /146g Condition This antique silver basket with handle is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition in keeping with age. The bright cut engraved decoration and crest are very crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the basket are all very clear.     An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare set of five antique Georgian English sterling silver bottle labels or tickets made by Hester Bateman, part of our wine related silverware collection These exceptional and collectable George III sterling silver bottle labels have a neoclassical urn shaped form. These antique silver labels or tickets are further ornamented with a bright cut engraved and pin struck ribbon bow designs accented with suspended leaf festoons. The body of each label is engraved with the individual wine or spirit: 'Port', 'Geneva', 'Claret', 'Rum' and 'Madeira'. These Georgian silver bottle labels are suspended by two ring loops to the corners of the urn designs and connected by silver round link chains.
