Antique French Silver Wine Taster Honoring Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette

About the Item

This very unique and ornate antique silver wine taster was made in France in circa 1780 and is hallmarked, however the maker cannot be identified so is being deemed 'unknown'. The wine taster is very intricately decorated with chased hearts around the outside of the bowl as well as one integrated into the handle surrounded by elaborate scroll work. Each heart around the bowl is engraved with the words Love, Valor and Affection in French, and each heart is separated by a fleur-de-lis. Around the rim, loosely translated, reads 'From the bottom of my heart' engraved in capital letters. The bottom of the taster's bowl is a large struck medallion of the King on the inside, and Queen Marie Antoinette on the reverse surrounded by heavy beading and rope accented decoration. The silver content of this piece has not been tested but is believed to be .950 which is common for French silver from this period. The provenance of this wine taster unfortunately has been lost, but is masterfully executed and possibly made as a presentation piece, or for a dedication or commemoration of the Royal marriage in 1770, or for the birth of one their children in 1778.
