English 1870s George Jones Brown, Green and Turquoise Majolica Strawberry Basket

US$2,950

About

An English mottled brown, green and turquoise Majolica strawberry basket from the late 19th century, signed George Jones. Born in England during the second half of the 19th century, this exquisite Majolica piece features a lovely palette made of brown, green and turquoise colors. Two sections, connected to one another by a looping handle, are designed to receive strawberries, the décor subtly reinforcing the theme. The body is delicately accented with strawberry leaves and flowers, recognizable with their charming white and yellow color. They provide the background on which the harvested strawberries are meant to be placed. The handle flows seamlessly into the petite feet on which the basket is raised, and imitates the shape of a branch with intertwining foliage. Majolica produced by George Jones rivals that of Minton and Wedgwood in both design and workmanship. George Jones won a medal at the Paris Exhibition in 1867 and received acclaim at exhibitions in London (1871), Vienna (1873) and Sydney (1876). The basket presents its English diamond registration on the underside, the F symbolizing the year of production while the H stands for the month of April. With its charming Silhouette and lovely colors, this English George Jones strawberry basket circa 1870 will be a nice decorative accent in any home, particularly in a dining room or kitchen.
