Set of Six Paris Porcelain Fruit Plates with Hand-Painted Scenes of Animals

About the Item

Set of six Paris porcelain scalloped plates with hand-painted scenes of birds and animals set in fanciful or pastoral environments, some with castles. Scenes include a lynx in a forest, parakeets with orchids, peacocks with a castle, mice playing, a heron and duck with a castle, and a rooster and chickens. The edges and interior perimeters are gilded.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Very good overall condition with no evidence or repairs, chips or cracks. There is overall wear to gilded surfaces (some plates more than others) (see photos), all consistent with their age and use.

    This is a beautiful early porcelain cabinet plate, all hand-painted, from the Davenport Company of Longport, Staffordshire Potteries, England, dating to very early in the 19th century, Georgian period, circa 1810. The Plate has a striking oriental design with many contrasting colours. It is all intricately hand-painted in fine detail with some of the best hand gilding work that we have seen. The base of the plate has the impressed mark; Davenport, which is one of the earliest marks of this factory, dating this piece to the early years of the 19th century.
