Six Piece "Mason's Ironstone" Toiletry Set, English, circa 1835
Located in Incline Village, NV
Outstanding and rare early 19th century Mason's Ironstone (6) piece set consisting of toilet necessities as follows:
Large oversized highly decorated pitcher and bowl for storing water and wash basin
Pair of chamber pots for evening needs
Similarly decorated toothbrush holder, large enough for multiple users
Soap dish with removable strainer dish
The fact that this rare ensemble has survived intact with no damage for nearly two hundred years is remarkable. It would have been an item owned and cherished by the aristocracy. and enjoyed as an art form because of it's high quality manufacture, in addition to the elaborate and detailed decoration. Also of note is the 8 sided octagonal form of each of the six items (see images). Please observe the elaborate serpent or snake formed handles to the large pitcher and both of the chamber pots (see images). Also worth mentioning is the attention the interior of the bowl receives, with as much decoration applied as the exterior (see image). The interior upper perimeters of all of the items receive the same amount of attention. The pitcher and bowl combination is larger than most that were manufactured during that period, (16" diameter) made possible by the strength of the ironstone.
The Mason's mark underneath the items indicates a 1830s manufacture, with the "Mason's Patent Ironstone China" above and beneath the crown in blue.
The ironstone process was patented by Charles Mason...

Chinese Export Blue & White Tea Bowl and Saucer, Neptune, the God of Sea
Located in Downingtown, PA
Chinese Export Porcelain European-subject Blue & White Tea Bowl and Saucer,
Neptune, The God of The Sea,
Dutch market,
Yongzheng Period,
Circa 1730-35
The Chinese Export porcelain, probably made for the Dutch market, depicts Neptune, the God of the Sea, standing with his triton in the center of the design with a number of other figures to his left and right with three large fish or whales at his feet. The lower section of the design depicting the sea. The border of each piece with a repeating diaper design.
Dimensions: Saucer: 4 1/2 inches diameter x 3/4 inch high (11.53cm diameter x 1.91cm high); Cup: 2 3/4 inches diameter x 1 3/4 inches high (6.99cm diameter x 4.45cm high).
The design is after an etching called `The Realm of Neptune` by Frederick Bloemaert (c.1610-c.1669) completed between 1650-1656, after a drawing by his father Abraham Bloemaert (1566–1651).
This is a Baroque design which is only found in blue and white on Chinese porcelain, it occurs on fine grained porcelain and Chinese soft-paste porcelain. Both dinner services and tea services were produced.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a plate in their collection, Helena Woolworth McCann Collection, Purchase, Winfield Foundation Gift, 1966 (Ass. # 66.27.5).
Reference:
Jorg states "The depiction of Neptune, the God of the Sea of classical mythology occurs in several varieties on Chine de Commande from the 1740`s onwards.
How well the design sold is illustrated by an order from 1778, when they sent a chocolate cup with this design as a model for similarly decorated plates. However, the Dutch merchants...

Mason's Patent Ironstone Dessert Service, Famille Verte Chinoiserie, 1813-1820
Located in London, GB
This is a stunning dessert service made by Miles Mason between 1813 and 1820. It is made of Patent Ironstone China, decorated in the very rare "Famille Verte Chinoiserie" pattern with a garden scene. It consists of a soup tureen with cover on stand, an oval dish, two lobed dishes, one large plate and 10 dessert plates.
Miles Mason started making porcelain in the 1790s, when porcelain imports from China ceased and there was a need for British-made porcelain. In the early 19th Century he purchased the patent for "ironstone" china from the Turner brothers and in 1813 he launched his "Mason't Patent Ironstone China". This was a china body that strictly speaking was earthenware, but as strong as porcelain and looking more like the porcelain that had been imported from China, than bone china. Ironstone china was cheaper to produce and its blueish hue was excellent for the Chinoiserie decorations that were still popular. The new middle class, sprung up with the Industrial Revolution, could not afford the expensive hand painted bone china table sets yet and they were also quite attached to the Chinese style of decorating. Mason saw the opportunity and started supplying huge amounts of dinner and dessert services to the new industrialists. Soon, all other potters started imitating him by bringing out their own "stone china' bodies, each with a slightly different name.
This dessert service has the typical and wonderful leaf-shaped serving dishes and simple round plates. It is decorated in a style typical for the earlier Mason's ironstone china: a hand painted imitation of a typical Chinoiserie garden scene of a tea drinking couple and their servants. The pattern is similar to patterns that can be found on Chinese import...
